********************************************************************************
Hey all you cyberspace music junkies,
I figure a few of you will be descending here on our quiet little towns Aug 13-14.
So I figured we here at DBN would give you as much info as possible. I am kinda
tired of opening the paper every morning and seeing column after column about
these events but until it's over I suffer.
The following information has been gathered from our local papers and radio.
Terrapin is located approx 30 minutes or so from all the proposed festival sites.
So I have to say what we all have ignored for years:
IF YOU DON'T HAVE TICKETS STAY HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I say this because I don't want horde's of people descending on my quiet little town
and it's areas. But of course like me at Dead shows you won't take my plea seriously
and will ascend upon us in great numbers.
Anyhow lets get down to business so you won't be lost when you get here. I may express
some opinion's in the following information they are mine all mine.
Nick- Dead Board News.
******************************************************************************************
FESTIVALS:
There are 3 proposed festivals set off to happen at the same time. We will take them
one at a time with the information we have at the moment. As info changes It will be posted
in the DeadHead Fido Echo. Or you may call Terrapin and ask for the most
updated info.
1: Woodstock 94 Winston Farms Tickets $135.00

Woodstock Site. Not really even close!
This festival will happen tickets are slated to go on sale Wed June 15 94 for Mass Transit Packages.
Local Ticket Sales 6-26-94
*6-26-94 Update It was reported today that the package tour tickets did go on sale yesterday
at Northeast Ticketmaster's. All though final approval still has not been satisfied. The promoters
were not informed of the package tour ticket sales. They blame it on a Ticket Master Error. Nonetheless
the Tickets aprox 60,000 were sold by 9:30 pm on the 15th.
* Meanwhile tickets for those arriving by car will not go on-sale until June 26. To arrive by Car you
must purchase a block of 4 tickets.
The confirmed acts are as follows:
Aerosmith
Alice in Chains
Allman Brothers
Arrested Development
Johnny Cash
Jimmy Cliff's All Star Reggae Jam Featuring:
Rita Marley and Shabba Ranks
Joe Cocker
Cranberries
Crosby, Stills and Nash
Cypress Hill
Bob Dylan
Melissa Ethridge
Peter Gabriel
Green Day
Metallica
The Neville Brothers
Nine Inch Nails

Not exactly in the true Woodstock spirit but this is who is going to be there.
If you do not have tickets to this event. They will not even let you in the town
of Saugerties. Keep that in mind before venturing out. Vehicles are suppose to
have special stickers and without it your out.
Security is suppose to be tight a few searches getting in the gate. Inside law enforcement
undercover only.
There will be some alternative parking site's that will bus you to and from the show.
This info will be supplied with your tickets.
Last word was no Food or Drink you must purchase from vendors. NO ALCOHOL AT ALL.
I know this is not a whole heck of alot of info. But the bottom line is Heavy Security,
No ticket you are not getting close.
My opinion living here and having well over 100 Dead shows under my belt along with
numerous other festivals and shows. This is the farthest thing from the 69 Woodstock.
My pre-show opinion is two thumbs down. You can find much better places to be and celebrate.
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
2: BETHEL 94 Bethel NY Tickets $75.00 - 150.00
Hurd & West Shore Dr. Bethel Ny. On-sale ?
Aug 12,13,14 W/ 15,16,17 now Tenative
*6-16-94 Update The show will go on. The Rhulen family of Sulliven County NY has agreed to finance
the festival. A mass gathering permit was awarded at the 12th hour
it is reported that the event might be legthened to a week.
This festival is located at the actual Woodstck site. To be promoted by Sid Bernstein the man
who brought the Beatle's to the U.S.
Mr. Bernstien has been plague with a nightmare of problems. The show is not set yet. There are serious
financial problems and 60 days left before show date with no permits. The proposed acts were more in keeping
with the original event. such as:
Ray Charles
Judy Collins
Micheal Mcdonald
Fleetwood Mac
Richie Havens
Melanie
Tom Paxton
John Sebastian
More To Be Named
The show is now going to happen it looks to be a pretty good show if the performers
are what you like. A much more mellower situation then Woodstock 94.
I actually give this show 1 thumbs up. Maybe 2 depending on acts to be named.
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
3:Freedom Fest 94 Tickets $3.00 a carload or
Undisclosed Location Bethel Ny. Food Donation (Based on Prior Years)
Tom Paxton Organizer
*Update 6-16-94 A interview with Tom Paxton has revealed that the show will happen
it will take place over 11days covering the actual woodstock dates of Aug 15,16,17
Location still undisclosed but will be in the vicinity of the actual Woodstock site.
In Sullivan County a Mass Gathering permit is required for over 10,000 people. When
Tom Paxton was asked how many would attend he replied 9,999.
This festival is held by a unknown source. It's location will be near the original Woodstock site.
The location is not announced till just a few days before. You should have no problem finding
it Just head towards Bethel NY and listen to the radio. I believe last year it was held at a store
called the OUTPOST TRADER. Anyhow it was right off of the main route 55 or 52. Don't worry you will
find it. Just call Terrapin Before you leave as soon as the location is known it will be posted.
I believe we had nearly 5,000 show up last year. Most people find it by accident. They make a pilgramage
to the original site then hop on over. If the Town was smart and Bethel 94 doesn't happen they will send people
to the Freedom Fest.
Anyhow the Freedom Fest runs several days a few days prior to the weekend and a few days after.
They allow you to camp just bring your tent. In the past a food kitchen as been set up for those who make it
with nothing but a good soul and vibes for good music.
Local bands are featured some hot jamming bands around the clock. Life is one big party. The show will happen
I am sure of it. I went the last couple of years and is where I plan to be this year. The exact location will
be announced as soon as it happens.
This is my obvious choice. Tent City, Brotherly Love, Lots of People, No Hassles, Hot Undiscovered acts.
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
How to get here:
I thought I would break down the festival site locations.
This is jst a brief description of the area. It will aide in
mapping out your trip and shed a little light.
TOWN OF WOODSTOCK:
This is not close to the concert site of Woodstock so don't be confused.
But I thought I would give you the location. It's a nice area to patch your bones.
With some great little shops.
The Town of Woodstock is located in Ulster County near Kingston.
The best way to locate it on the map is find Kingston first.
Kingston is located off of 87 the New York Thruway.
So you would take the Kingston exit from the Thruway I believe
exit 19. Go around the traffic circle and follow RT 28. Follow
rt 28 towards West hurley, Boicevile, Phoenicia.
Keep going straight down Rt 28 not far until you hit a Exxon Station You will
at that time see a sign for Woodstock. Just hang a right at the sign the road will
then come to a left or right turn hang a right and welcome to the town of woodstock.
(This is not near the actual Woodstock Site)
WOODSTOCK 94:
This is also located near KINGSTON at Winston Farms Route 212 Saugerties NY.
One again you would take the New York Stae Thruway 87. Saugerties is right
off of exit 20 on 87. Route 212 is right off of the 20 exit as well.
BETHEL 94:
This is the actual Woodstock Site where the 69 festival was held. The direction are a little diffrent.
OK Bethel is located near Monticello so look for Monticello on your map.
No matter where you are coming from you will want to get onto Route 17 aka Quickway.
Either thru Pennsylvania or Via 84 or 87. It doesn't matter just get on 17.
Follow 17 to the 104 exit RTE 17B Monticello Raceway exit.
Follow 17B around the race track thru Mongaup valley and White Lake (A little haul but don't worry keep going till
you find White lake) Go thru White lake and Route 55. On your right hand side shortly after you pass
Route 55 you will see HURD RD. Make a right on Hurd Road. The Next Intersection is West Shore Rd.
Welcome to the sight of Woodstock 69. If you make a right on West Shore You will be in the town of BETHEL.
Freedom Fest 94:
If you follow the direction's to bethel 94 you will more than likely find the Freedom fest off of route 17B
right nest to the sight. It will be around the corner somewhere.
I suggest you might want to turn your radio to
92.7 KOJ Middletown FM or WPDH 101.5 FM Poughkeepsie.
They are the area's Rock Stations and usually keep good updates on the Festivals
during Woodstock Weekends.
In Summary:
We put this together just to help you know whats going on up here. I hope some of the info will be helpful.
You have any question's or want to find out where the Freedom fest is located. Just call Terrapin before you head
out I will give you any info as soon as it comes in.

EDITORS CORNER:
Welcome to Dead Board News Vol-1. DBN shares no affiliation with the Grateful Dead
or any other orginization. We have simply developed a quarterly news letter for
on-line Dead Heads.
This is the first issue with many more in the works. I hope this publication will
be successful. I hope you will enjoy it's content. Feel free to copy, print and
pass around.
How it all started......I guess it was my first show in 10-24-78. Since then I have
followed the Dead on tour off and on. Playing tunes in the parking lot hanging with
my brothers and sister. But then came the time it was no longer possible to drop out
of society and hang on the road for 2,3,4 months at a time. No it became time in my
life for Marraige and a Mortgage. I still however catch my fair share of shows each
year. I was lucky to marry a woman who digs the Dead and is a musician.
Well sometime back I decided to stop hanging around BBS'S and start my own. I of course
decided to make it Deadicated. As time passed I wanted to create a newsletter about our
Deadicated Cyberspace and it's users. But all alone I figured not a chance.
Then one morning in January I checked the morning mail on Terrapin. Viola there was a
message from this dude named Mike Kaufmann. His message went kinda like this:" I am a
Sysop of a Deadicated Board and was wondering if you wanted to swap files and info."
Well immediatly I called Mike's board and we talked. Mike and I became good friends so
I pitched the newsletter idea and he caught it. So what you see now is a result of our
cyberspace friendship.
The reason I wanted to do this newsletter is to Thank You my Brothers and Sisters and
the Dead for being my Mother, Father and Siblings all those years. The Dead and Deadheads
were and are my family. Without the guidance of you all no telling what would have happened
to me. But I am who I am today because of the love and support of my Dead family and the
Music which has spoken many truth's of wisdom to my soul.
Nick

A PEACEFUL PLACE, OR SO IT LOOKS FROM SPACE
The Bus Came By and I got On.........
*May, 1976 - Walt Whitman High School, Huntington Station,NY
Four Teens are sitting at the end of a table in the
lunchroom discussing plans for the afternoon. One pulls a
baggie from his sock and asks does anyone have a tray to
Clean something on. We all say no, but one of the kids pull
out an album from a stack of books, and passes it over.
Having never seen the Rainbow pictures on the white cover, I
had to inquire about the band. Its, The Grateful Dead, my
sister gave me this album, its really cool, you should check
it out!
THUS A BEAUTIFUL FRIENDSHIP IS BORN
*September 3, 1977 - Raceway Park, Englishtown, NJ
After one and a half years of waiting (pleading), the
time had finally arrived. My First Dead Show! At 16 years
old, naturally my folks were not thrilled at the prospect of
their son travelling thru the city, across the river to see
who, The Grateful Dead. I was in awe, and hooked. My first
Everything, I knew right then and there, I had a bus pass for
life!
SO MANY ROADS I'VE TRAVELLED
As I sit here typing this, I cannot help but to
reminisce a little. After leaving NY, living up and down the
east coast, watching out the window, for the mailman, hoping
my Deer Creek tickets come today, I have come a long way
since Englishtown. Happily married after 12 years, twin boys
at six healthy as they can be, a career that is going on 10
years, one can say that we can not only survive, but prosper
in this long strange life we choose to lead. After seeing
almost 200 shows in the past seventeen years, I just hope the
band keeps giving us the joyous experience we have all known,
and we can give something in return.
WELCOME TO CYBERSPACE
Now for the present and why this newsletter. I
bought my first computer in 1985, a Commodore 64 ( didn't
everyone have one of these?), and a modem shortly thereafter.
I proceeded over the next some years to communicate over the
phone lines and eventually upgrade to a personal computer.
Remember, this is ALL a hobby to me. I'm a mechanic by trade,
and require very little pc experience on the job. After many
years of communication on ONLINE services, I felt something
was missing, a personal touch and feel for a BBS(bulletin
board system). Thus the idea of Space Your Face was born, in
the summer of 1993. I decided to do this for a couple of
reasons, the love of the band and to pursue the hobbies of my
PC and my taping. I felt that I could offer a source no one
had tapped into much. Well, I have come to find out about a
dozen or so others, have had this crazy notion to do this
too. And hence DBA is here.
DBA
Dead Board Alliance was created to form a bond
between these BBS's, for an exchange of ideas, computer
programs, pictures and friendship. There is already a tight
circle of NETHEADS, that is growing daily, and we wanted to
help keep this going. Thru networks such as FIDONET,
INTERNET, USENET, and others we can all communicate, with a
minimum expense.
SPACE YOUR FACE
We have put together some fine features here at SYF.
Along with the "Normal" BBS functions, such as online games,
files, and messages, we offer a variety of Dead related
services. The current mail order hotline messages are posted
in out bulletin sections, along with detailed mail order
instructions, just in case you can't get thru !!! Online
Setlists are quite popular, and updated Grateful Dead Hour
program logs and station lists are posted weekly.
Taping and tape trading have always been the one of the
highest priorities at SFY, and we try to keep up to date with
all of the latest software for one's taping needs.
THE BITTER END
In conclusion, mainly because I hate to type, one
will get the idea that a bulletin board system for The Dead
is novel, crazy or wonderful, but whatever the decision might
be, we spend a lot of time here making sure things go
smoothly, and we are still HAVING FUN! Everyone is always
welcome, and we welcome all ideas for the future. Thanks for
your time...............

Marijauna Facts The Reagan's Didn't want you to know:
These Views are not neccasarily the views of DBN a user submitted this for publication.
We believe in America all should be able to submit thier point of view along with Freedom
of choice:
MARIJUANA
1. Marijuana causes brain damage
The most celebrated study that claims to show brain damage is
the rhesus monkey study of Dr. Robert Heath, done in the late
1970s. This study was reviewed by a distinguished panel of
scientists sponsored by the Institute of Medicine and the National
Academy of Sciences. Their results were published under the title,
Marijuana and Health in 1982. Heath's work was sharply criticized
for its insufficient sample size (only four monkeys), its failure
to control experimental bias, and the misidentification of normal
monkey brain structure as "damaged". Actual studies of human
populations of marijuana users have shown no evidence of brain
damage. For example, two studies from 1977, published in the
Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) showed no
evidence of brain damage in heavy users of marijuana. That same
year, the American Medical Association (AMA) officially came out in
favor of decriminalizing marijuana. That's not the sort of thing
you'd expect if the AMA thought marijuana damaged the brain.
2. Marijuana damages the reproductive system
This claim is based chiefly on the work of Dr. Gabriel Nahas,
who experimented with tissue (cells) isolated in petri dishes, and
the work of researchers who dosed animals with near-lethal amounts
of cannabinoids (i.e., the intoxicating part of marijuana). Nahas'
generalizations from his petri dishes to human beings have been
rejected by the scientific community as being invalid. In the case
of the animal experiments, the animals that survived their ordeal
returned to normal within 30 days of the end of the experiment.
Studies of actual human populations have failed to demonstrate that
marijuana adversely affects the reproductive system.
3. Marijuana is a "gateway" drug -- it leads to hard drugs
This is one of the more persistent myths. A real world
example of what happens when marijuana is readily available can be
found in Holland. The Dutch partially legalized marijuana in the
1970s. Since then, hard drug use -- heroin and cocaine -- have
DECLINED substantially. If marijuana really were a gateway drug,
one would have expected use of hard drugs to have gone up, not
down. This apparent "negative gateway" effect has also been
observed in the United States. Studies done in the early 1970s
showed a negative correlation between use of marijuana and use of
alcohol. A 1993 Rand Corporation study that compared drug use in
states that had decriminalized marijuana versus those that had not,
found that where marijuana was more available -- the states that
had decriminalized -- hard drug abuse as measured by emergency room
episodes decreased. In short, what science and actual experience
tell us is that marijuana tends to substitute for the much more
dangerous hard drugs like alcohol, cocaine, and heroin.
4. Marijuana suppresses the immune system
Like the studies claiming to show damage to the reproductive
system, this myth is based on studies where animals were given
extremely high -- in many cases, near-lethal -- doses of
cannabinoids. These results have never been duplicated in human
beings. Interestingly, two studies done in 1978 and one done in
1988 showed that hashish and marijuana may have actually stimulated
the immune system in the people studied.
5. Marijuana is much more dangerous than tobacco
Smoked marijuana contains about the same amount of carcinogens
as does an equivalent amount of tobacco. It should be remembered,
however, that a heavy tobacco smoker consumes much more tobacco
than a heavy marijuana smoker consumes marijuana. This is because
smoked tobacco, with a 90% addiction rate, is the most addictive of
all drugs while marijuana is less addictive than caffeine. Two
other factors are important. The first is that paraphernalia laws
directed against marijuana users make it difficult to smoke safely.
These laws make water pipes and bongs, which filter some of the
carcinogens out of the smoke, illegal and, hence, unavailable. The
second is that, if marijuana were legal, it would be more
economical to have cannabis drinks like bhang (a traditional drink
in the Middle East) or tea which are totally non-carcinogenic.
This is in stark contrast with "smokeless" tobacco products like
snuff which can cause cancer of the mouth and throat. When all of
these facts are taken together, it can be clearly seen that the
reverse is true: marijuana is much SAFER than tobacco.
6. Legal marijuana would cause carnage on the highways
Although marijuana, when used to intoxication, does impair
performance in a manner similar to alcohol, actual studies of the
effect of marijuana on the automobile accident rate suggest that it
poses LESS of a hazard than alcohol. When a random sample of fatal
accident victims was studied, it was initially found that marijuana
was associated with RELATIVELY as many accidents as alcohol. In
other words, the number of accident victims intoxicated on
marijuana relative to the number of marijuana users in society gave
a ratio similar to that for accident victims intoxicated on alcohol
relative to the total number of alcohol users. However, a closer
examination of the victims revealed that around 85% of the people
intoxicated on marijuana WERE ALSO INTOXICATED ON ALCOHOL. For
people only intoxicated on marijuana, the rate was much lower than
for alcohol alone. This finding has been supported by other
research using completely different methods. For example, an
economic analysis of the effects of decriminalization on marijuana
usage found that states that had reduced penalties for marijuana
possession experienced a rise in marijuana use and a decline in
alcohol use with the result that fatal highway accidents decreased.
This would suggest that, far from causing "carnage", legal
marijuana might actually save lives.
7. Marijuana "flattens" human brainwaves
This is an out-and-out lie perpetrated by the Partnership for
a Drug-Free America. A few years ago, they ran a TV ad that
purported to show, first, a normal human brainwave, and second, a
flat brainwave from a 14-year-old "on marijuana". When researchers
called up the TV networks to complain about this commercial, the
Partnership had to pull it from the air. It seems that the
Partnership faked the flat "marijuana brainwave". In reality,
marijuana has the effect of slightly INCREASING alpha wave
activity. Alpha waves are associated with meditative and relaxed
states which are, in turn, often associated with human creativity.
8. Marijuana is more potent today than in the past
This myth is the result of bad data. The researchers who made
the claim of increased potency used as their baseline the THC
content of marijuana seized by police in the early 1970s. Poor
storage of this marijuana in un-air conditioned evidence rooms
caused it to deteriorate and decline in potency before any chemical
assay was performed. Contemporaneous, independent assays of
unseized "street" marijuana from the early 1970s showed a potency
equivalent to that of modern "street" marijuana. Actually, the
most potent form of this drug that was generally available was sold
legally in the 1920s and 1930s by the pharmaceutical company
Smith-Klein under the name, "American Cannabis".
9. Marijuana impairs short-term memory
This is true but misleading. Any impairment of short-term
memory disappears when one is no longer under the influence of
marijuana. Often, the short-term memory effect is paired with a
reference to Dr. Heath's poor rhesus monkeys to imply that the
condition is permanent.
10. Marijuana lingers in the body like DDT
This is also true but misleading. Cannabinoids are fat
soluble as are innumerable nutrients and, yes, some poisons like
DDT. For example, the essential nutrient, Vitamin A, is fat
soluble but one never hears people who favor marijuana prohibition
making this comparison.
11. There are over a thousand chemicals in marijuana smoke
Again, true but misleading. The 31 August 1990 issue of the
magazine Science notes that of the over 800 volatile chemicals
present in roasted COFFEE, only 21 have actually been tested on
animals and 16 of these cause cancer in rodents. Yet, coffee
remains legal and is generally considered fairly safe.
12. No one has ever died of a marijuana overdose
This is true. It was put in to see if you are paying
attention. Animal tests have revealed that extremely high doses of
cannabinoids are needed to have lethal effect. This has led
scientists to conclude that the ratio of the amount of cannabinoids
necessary to get a person intoxicated (i.e., stoned) relative to
the amount necessary to kill them is 1 to 40,000. In other words,
to overdose, you would have to consume 40,000 times as much
marijuana as you needed to get stoned. In contrast, the ratio for
alcohol varies between 1 to 4 and 1 to 10. It is easy to see how
upwards of 5000 people die from alcohol overdoses every year and no
one EVER dies of marijuana overdoses.
WHAT IS THE ICLU DRUG TASK FORCE?
The Indiana Civil Liberties Union (ICLU) Drug Task Force is
involved in education and lobbying efforts directed toward
reforming drug policy. Specifically, we support ACLU Policy
Statement number 210 which calls for the legalization of marijuana.
We also support an end to the drug war. In its place, we favor
"harm reduction" strategies which treat drug abuse as what it is --
a medical problem -- rather than a criminal justice problem.
The Drug Task Force also works to end urine and hair testing
of workers by private industry. These kinds of tests violate
worker privacy to no good purpose because they detect past use of
certain drugs (mostly marijuana) while ignoring others (e.g., LSD)
and cannot detect current impairment. In situations where public
and worker safety is a legitimate concern, we advocate impairment
testing devices which reliably detect degradation of performance
without infringing upon worker privacy.
For more information about the activities of the Drug Task
Force, call the ICLU at (317) 635-4059 or call Paul Hager at (812)
333-1384 or e-mail to hagerp@cs.indiana.edu on the InterNet.
